Twitter has sanctioned a tweet made by President Donald Trump this morning which started that he would authorize the military to open fire on civilian protesters in Minneapolis if the protests turn into an aggressive one.
The social media platform said the tweet violated twitter’s laws and they glorify violence. Twitter had already placed a warning on the tweet instead of taking the liberty of deleting the tweet.
“Twitter had determined that it is in the interest of the public to be inaccessible.”
President Donald Trump had earlier tweeted about the protests going on in Minnesota all for the sake of the death of the African-American “GEORGE FLOYD” who was killed by a White American Police Officer. The death sparked a series of protests in the country.
The president said he would “Send in the national guard”, which was later backed up with a warning saying “When the stealing and looting starts”, “The shooting starts”.
The new policy to put a warning on tweets that started on the middle of 2019 but twitter hasn’t put any warning or deleted any tweets made by President Donald Trump until recently when they fact checked a tweet made by the President.
After twitter busted the tweet, President Donald Trump signed a social media executive order so as to regulate the use of the social media platforms in the country.
It’s been quite a long time since the President has been beefing with so social media companies, because of things he posts or tweets online.
The latest quarrel happened on Tuesday, May 26 after twitter added fact-check links to his tweet for the first time.
The white house hasn’t shared details of the executive order and it isn’t clear what regulatory steps the president took without the new laws the Congress recently passed.
DOES THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES HAVE THE POWER TO SHUT DOWN THE SOCIAL MEDIA?
He may have the power but it definitely won’t be straightforward.
According to Harvard Law Professor Laurence Tribe, Twitter is not in any way violating the freedom of speech by adding fast-check link to trump’s tweet. Unlike the government, twitter is a privately owned company and they have the ability to moderate what their users share.
The freedom of speech law in the United State isn’t limiting Facebook, Google, Twitter and other social media networks. Instead, Professor Tribe explained that it is limiting the government from the violation of people’s freedom to say what they want and not the private companies.
Meaning that, you can’t go to jail for things like blogging theories that are not true but the social network has the ability to delete your account.
If Trump shuts down the social media companies, he’ll be the one violating the freedom of speech law
BUT WHAT EXACTLY CAN TRUMP DO?
One thing Trump can do is to regulate tech companies like twitter through other ways.
He could try to reverse. Section 230, one law that is protecting tech platforms that enables other people from suing them on the content that their users post on their sites.
This will allow anybody who feels that they are victims of anti-conservative discrimination for these platforms to sue the platforms.
For all efforts to reverse the law doesn’t have enough support yet.
