The Nigerian Army has discarded the allegation that its men were responsible for shooting at Lekki toll plaza on Tuesday last week. They maintained Lagos state Government brought in military after 24-hour curfew was enforced. on this post we will be viewing how Nigerian Army declares no annihilation at Lekki toll gate.
In a testament stamped by the Acting Deputy Director, Public Relations, 81 Division, Major Osoba Olaniyi, the army authorities declares as untrue, the statement that “noncombatant demonstrators were annihilated” by soldiers at Lekki toll plaza.
“This assertion is false, baseless and proposed at initiating pandemonium in the nation. At no time did soldiers of the Nigerian Army release fire on any civilian,” the report stated.
At the period when the ENDSARS demonstration began, no soldier of 81 Division Nigerian Army Lagos participated. Nevertheless, the choice to bring in the military was decided by the Lagos State government after a 24-hour curfew was enforced.
This was as a result of the violence which led to several police stations being destroyed, policemen murdered, bandits in police stations free and arms taken away.
The state was fast deteriorating into chaos. It was at this stage that Lagos State government requested for the military to interfere in order to reinstate regularity. The interference of the military followed all laid down processes for internal security operations and every soldier who participated, operated within the limits of the Rules of Engagement (ROE) for internal security operations.
Lastly, Headquarters 81 Division, Nigerian Army repeats that the Nigerian Army, in carrying out its legitimate tasks, did not fire at any civilian as there are conspicuous and substantial proofs to prove this statement. “This declaration is a compromise of trouble-makers who desire is to smear the reputation of the Nigerian Army.” The army authorities thus urge the public to disregard the claim as there is no atom of truth in it.
