In touch Daily Devotional: Thriving in Our Present Culture. Titus 1:5
The philosophies and values of society can be found everywhere—on radio and television, in books and magazines, and in workplace and corner coffee shop conversations. Believers cannot escape the pressures to behave and think like everyone else. Nonetheless, the Bible instructs us to live in our culture without becoming a part of it.
Paul explained how we are to accomplish this in his letter to Titus, who ministered on the worldly island of Crete. Those who are above reproach—that is, blameless and unmoved by cultural sins—must be “holding firmly the faithful word” (Titus 1:9). Paul was saying that we must cling to God’s Word and cultivate a lifestyle based on His principles.
The Bible is God’s revelation—it tells us what He thinks, how He acts, and what He expects of us—but it can’t help us if we never open it. Make time each day to read Scripture and carefully reflect on it. What are the passages’ meanings, and how do they apply to our lives?
Scriptural truths are most effective when we believe the Word wholeheartedly and consistently obey it. We will reflect Christ in the world without being of the world if we take practical steps to keep Scripture in our daily lives.
